Outbreak of Acinetobacter spp septicemia in a neonatal ICU.

چکیده
An outbreak of Acinetobacter spp infection in the neonatal unit at Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi, India, is described. During a 6-month period, 68 strains of Acinetobacter baumannii were isolated from the blood and CSF of 47 neonates admitted to the intensive care unit. Diagnosis of clinically significant bacteremia was made in 36 patients. On environmental/personnel sampling, Acinetobacter spp isolates with similar antibiogram were recovered from intravenous catheter and washbasin. Control of the outbreak was possible only after strict infection control practices in the unit. It was concluded that any clinical multidrug resistant A. baumannii isolate can be a potential nosocomial outbreak strain.

DISCUSSION Septicaemia remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborns, more so in the developing countries. In India, according to the National Neonatal Perinatal Database (NNPD) 2000, the incidence of neonatal septicaemia has been reported to be 24/1000 live births. Along with other organisms like E.coli ,Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas spp. and Salm...

Septicaemia remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborns in the developing countries. According to National Neonatal Perinatal Database (2000) in India, the incidence of neonatal septicemia is 24/1000 live births. Changing bacterial flora and emergence of resistant strains further aggravate the problem. Acinetobacter spp. have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens....

Bacterial sepsis is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among neonates. It is characterized as generalized bacterial infection indicated by positive blood culture in the first four weeks of life (Agarwal et al., 2001). The common causative agents for neonatal sepsis are Staphylococcus spp, Enterococci spp, E. coli, Klebsiella spp, Enterobacter spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acin...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter species Causing a Nosocomial Outbreak at Intensive Care Units in a Korean Teaching Hospital: Suggesting the Correlations with the Clinical and Environmental Samples, Including Respiratory Tract-related Instruments
Background: Acinetobacter spp. is an important nosocomial pathogen for which increasing resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents has been observed. Prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter spp. in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a teaching hospital in Korea started to increase in 2008. The aim of this study was to determine the source of pathogen spread and to characterize the ...
